They were in their late teens and early 20s when they entered the world stage, but they crooned grownup tales of love and sex. Their debut album, Dru Hill, dropped in 1996 and went platinum on the strength of singles like “Never Make a Promise,” “In My Bed,” “Tell Me,” and “5 Steps.” The group often drew comparisons to Jodeci and Boyz II Men – influences they were happy to claim – and like many of the greats before them, their rich complex harmonies, rooted in soul music, met at the intersection of gospel, blues, hip-hop, and R&B. They created a massive buzz after a few years, and landed a record deal with Island. The quartet got their start at local and regional talent shows.
In 1992, high school friends Mark “Sisqo” Andrews, Larry “Jazz” Anthony Jr., Tamir “Nokio” Ruffin, and James “Woody” Green formed a group eventually called Dru Hill, after Druid Hill Park in their native Baltimore. I love the extraness that is at the heart of all of Sisqo’s performances and then there’s the fact that he then went on to give us some hits as a solo artist. SISQO! C’mon, They gave us Sisqo! – A large part of the reason that I love Dru Hill is that they gave us the blonde-haired bare-chested little singer that could: Sisqo! Who doesn’t love that yell? Before we had Fantasia, kicking off shoes and hollering us into deliverance, we had Sisqo tearing off his shirt and yelling us into terrible relationship choices. Whether they were talking about a relationship that has reached an impasse, appreciate a golden moment in a relationship, or mourning the loss of love Dru Hill makes you feel every line, and that leads me to my next point. Power Ballads – Dru Hill ballads turn you into a 90s R&B singer and a scorned lover at the same damn time! At the same damn time?! At the same damn time! You can lose yourself in a Dru Hill ballad. And speaking of their ballads, let’s really get into it. There are songs like the “In My Bed Remix” and “How Deep Is Your Love?” and even in their ballads, there’s a bounce that makes the listener do a little two-step.
They went all-in when it came to their visuals and gave passionate performances that made you want to sing along.ĭanceable Hits – “If you wanna dance/ Imma make you dance/ If you wanna move/ Imma make you move” Yes, all the classic male R&B groups of the 90s gave you a bop or two in their catalog but Dru Hill took it up a notch. They gave you all of the oversized tops and unique suit situations. They gave you signature tapestries and mirrors. “bUt, wHo GoEs Up FoR DrU hIlL? WhY dO yOu LoVe DrU HiLl? ” Me. Dru Hill gave us looks, bops, ballads, and a breakout star and I want to give them their flowers. That’s right, Jazz, Woody, Nokio and Sisqo deserve to be revered as R&B icons. In fact, I’d argue that they don’t get enough credit for being one of the best R&B groups of the 90s. Since I was just a jit with a walkman I’ve loved 90s R&B and I’ve always had a soft spot for Dru Hill.
